Why O&M Planning Should Start Before Commissioning

Maintenance schedules, spares and monitoring decisions made during design and handover decide how a plant performs in year five, not just year one.

Operations and maintenance is often treated as something to arrange after commissioning. In practice, the plant’s long-term performance is shaped much earlier — by access paths, monitoring choices and the quality of handover documents.

Design for access and cleaning

Walkways, water points and safe roof access determine whether modules are cleaned as often as the site needs. In dusty regions, cleaning frequency is one of the largest drivers of annual generation.

Choose monitoring you will actually use

String-level or inverter-level monitoring should feed alerts to someone responsible for acting on them. A data logger nobody checks adds cost without adding performance.

Hand over complete documentation

As-built drawings, test records, warranty certificates and equipment serial numbers are what make troubleshooting and warranty claims fast. They should be part of the handover checklist, not an afterthought.

Plan spares and inspection frequency

A short list of critical spares — fuses, SPD cartridges, connectors — and a defined preventive-maintenance calendar keep small faults from becoming long outages.
